Changes to the bylaws: Synopsis: Resident membership added allowing graduates from CNME schools to maintain their membership for one year during their residency with full voting rights and can hold appointed positions within the Association. A Resident Member will be a former naturopathic medical student as defined in Article IV, Section 2, a) above, who has recently graduated and wishes to maintain membership within the NMSA. Resident members may continue their membership for one year after graduation after which they are eligible to be Alumni Members.
Resident members will be empowered with full rights and privileges to have voice in the business of the Corporation, and to vote and to hold appointed offices in the manner described in these bylaws and the Corporation policy documents.
Synopsis: Notice of elections changed from 60 days to 45 days. Terms of office are changed from a calendar year (Jan 1 – Dec 31) to August 1st – July 31st.
Notification of upcoming elections will be advertised 45 days prior to election date. Terms of office will coincide with the school year beginning August 1st and ending July 31st.
Synopsis: Adding Executive Committee Officers and split up single positions into two positions. Current officers: Proposed in the new bylaws President President VP Communications VP Communications VP Public Relations VP Public Relations Treasurer Treasurer (appointed) VP Membership & Education VP Membership VP Education Secretary (appointed) VP of Online Resources Immediate Past President Synopsis: All positions will be elected by vote of the membership except for the Treasurer and Secretary both of whom will be appointed from a pool of applicants.
Officers constituting the Executive Committee of this Corporation will be the President, the Immediate Past President, the Vice President of Membership, the Vice President of Education, the Treasurer, the Vice President of Communication, the Vice President of Public Relations, Vice President of Online Resources, and the Secretary. All officers, with the exception of the Treasurer and Secretary, will be elected in accordance with the provisions of Article VI, Section 1 of these bylaws. The Treasurer and the Secretary will be appointed in accordance with the provisions of Article Section. In the case that an elected Officer or member of the Executive Committee steps down prior to the end of their service, the Executive committee may appoint a replacement to serve until the next election. Synopsis: Added to the bylaws are requirements that the Executive Committee must comply or risk being removed from office.
Section 3 Requirements of all elected officers of the Executive Committee include: i. Attend all executive committee meetings (missing two meetings is cause for removal from office) ii. Represent the NMSA in a professional manner iii. Submit monthly progress reports to the Secretary to be kept as official records iv. Attend the annual conference v. Attend the annual leadership retreat
Failure to comply with these requirements can result in removal from office.
Synopsis: Bylaws have been revised to include the duties of the elected and appointed positions within the NMSA.
Section 4: Duties of the Executive Committee
Duties of the Executive Committee Officers of the Corporation are as follows:
i. NMSA President will:
- Serve a two year term, the first year serving as NMSA President and the second year serving as the Immediate Past President.
- Preside at all meetings of the Corporation and act as Chairperson of the Executive Committee.
- S/He will serve as a liaison with other professional organizations, or appoint a Member of the executive committee as the liaison.
- The president will also maintain regular contact with the AANP as well as other regional state/provincial naturopathic Corporations.
- The President will administer these bylaws and perform all the duties incident to his/her office and generally will oversee the business and affairs of the Corporation.
ii. Immediate Past President will - Attend Executive Committee meetings with full voting privileges
- Represent the NMSA in a professional manner
- Attend the annual student conference.
- Attend the annual leadership retreat
- Assist the president in completing their duties
iii. Vice President of Communication will: a. preside as President at all meetings in the absence of the President. b. S/He will act as chairperson of the Ethics Committee. c. communicate directly with the NMSA Chapter President from each accredited naturopathic medical school on a regular basis. d. act as a liaison between the Executive Committee and the NMSA Chapter presidents
iv. Vice President of Membership will:
- Be responsible for maintaining a listing of all members taken into the corporation together with a list of all members suspended or expelled, fined or dropped for nonpayment of dues, as well as a list of members in good standing; and report the same to the Executive Committee.
- communicate directly with the NMSA Chapter Presidents regarding the organization of and coordination of regular membership drives.
- along with the VP of Communications and VP of PR, the VP of Membership will coordinate the representation of the NMSA at school orientations and at school events appropriate for an NMSA presence.
v. Vice President of Education will: manage and report the direction and activities of the Organization’s Track Chairs Track Chairs will be appointed by the Executive Committee and report to the VP of Education. Track Chairs are:

vi. Vice President of Public Relations will:
- Be responsible for the publication, marketing and public education of the Organization including:
- 1. Quarterly newsletter
- 2. Press releases
- 3. NMSA sponsored education materials
- 4. Articles about NMSA in other publications
vii. Vice President of Online Resources will:a. maintain the NMSA website including:b. approve comments and events posted by membersc. Manage updating of all information relevant to NMSA including
- 1. Academic calendars and events from each college,
- NMSA events and publications
- All information related to Research
- All information related to Residencies
- All blogs
- Discussion forums
- Listservs
viii. The Treasurer, appointed by the Executive Committee, will: - Have the care and custody and be responsible for all the funds and securities of the Corporation. Before entering upon the duties of his office
- Will execute a surety bond in such amount as may be required by the executive committee; said bond will be in favor of the Corporation for the faithful performance of the duties of Treasurer and the accounting of all monies received and state for what purpose it was paid.
- S/He will deposit all Corporation funds promptly in a bank which will be designated by written order of the Executive Committee.
- S/He will keep accurate books and records of account for all business transactions of the Corporation according to state law.
- The Treasurer will report current financial standing of the Organization at Executive Committee meetings and annual meetings of Regular members.
- Develop the Annual Budget
The funds, books, and vouchers of the Corporation will, with the exception of confidential reports submitted by members, be subject to verification and inspection by the Executive Committee.
ix. The Secretary, appointed by the Executive Committee will: - Have the care and custody of the records and archives of the Corporation.
- Will keep and maintain all minutes of regular meetings of the Executive Committee as well as relay the documents to the VP of Online Resources to be posted to the website.
- The Secretary must disclose a mailing address suitable for receiving corporation materials.
Section 5: Officers constituting the National Leadership Team of the Corporation include:
- a. Communications Branch: NMSA Chapter presidents
- b. Membership Branch: Membership Coordinator and Elections coordinator
- c. Education Branch: Leadership, , Legislative, Philosophy, Professional Development, and Public Health Track Chairs
- d. Public Relations Branch: Public Relations Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, and Fundraising Coordinator.

Section 6: Duties of the National Leadership Team • NMSA Chapter Presidents will serve a one year term and • Preside at all meetings of the chapter and serve as moderator of those meetings. • s/he will serve as a liaison between the chapter and the executive committee, as well as the chapter and the student government association specific to that college. • s/he will attend all meetings as established by the student government association or delegate an alternate to attend in their place • participate in all meetings of the NMSA Communications branch • administer these bylaws and those of the chapter and perform all said duties and generally oversee the business and affairs of the chapter.
• Elections Coordinator will serve a one year term and will • work with the web service to maintain current candidate information, position requirements, and a functioning online voting system. • Relay results of the elections to the Executive Committee • Develop advertising materials and distribute to VP of Communication for disbursal to NMSA Chapter Presidents. • This position reports to the VP of Membership. iii) Leadership Track Chair will serve a one year term and be responsible for • the planning, promotion, and smooth implementation of the annual NMSA Leadership retreat. • Development of self-care resources for students • Arrange for and schedule speakers to present at the annual NMSA conference • Attend all meetings of the NMSA Education branch • Build and maintain web resource on naturopathic leadership issues • Send monthly updates to Vice President of Education
• Legislative Track Chair will serve a one year term and • act as a liaison between the various legislative and public awareness groups at each school • attend all meetings of the NMSA Education branch • send monthly updates to Vice President of Education • build and maintain web resource on naturopathic legislative issues • coordinate NMSA’s involvement with DC FLI • arrange for and schedule speakers to present at the annual NMSA conference
• Philosophy Track Chair will serve a one year term • organize and enforce the Philosophy Scholars competition • attend all meetings of the NMSA Education branch • send monthly updates to Vice President of Education • arrange for and schedule speakers to present at the annual NMSA conference
• Professional Development Track Chair will serve a one year term and • Provide resources and information about domestic and international residencies and job opportunities for future ND’s • Build and maintain web resources regarding residency and professional opportunities available to students post graduation • attend all meetings of the NMSA Education branch • send monthly updates to Vice President of Education • arrange for and schedule speakers to present at the annual NMSA conference
• Public Health Track will serve one year term and • attend all meetings of the NMSA Education branch • send monthly updates to Vice President of Education • arrange for and schedule speakers to present at the annual NMSA conference • Act as liaison with the Chapter Global Health Ambassadors
• Public Health Coordinator will serve a one year term and • coordinate public health opportunities between student members and organizations such as NDI, Naturopaths Without Borders, etc • attend all meetings of the NMSA Education branch • send monthly updates to Vice President of Education • arrange for and schedule speakers to present at the annual NMSA conference
• Section 15 Marketing Coordinator will serve a one year term and • create and maintain NMSA branded materials • attend all meetings of the NMSA Public Relations branch • send monthly updates to Vice President of Public Relations
• xi. Fundraising Coordinator will Plan, promote and implement NMSA’s Annual Fundraising Event.
• xii. AMSA Chapter Coordinators will serve a one year term and • Report to the NMSA AMSA Director • Coordinate efforts with the NMSA AMSA Director to facilitate amicable and collaborative relationships with their school and AMSA. • attend and represent NMSA at AMSA National and Regional conferences • support AMSA’s Naturopathic Interest Group Coordinator • serve as a liaison for regional AMSA chapters regarding legislative action, conference participation, and naturopathic medicine • send monthly updates to NMSA AMSA Director
• xiii. Student Conference Chairs will serve a one year term and • organize the annual NMSA student conference which entails: o solicit funds and sponsorship to finance the conference o communicate with track chairs to coordinate and finalize speakers and events for conference o establish a venue o appoint a conference organization team and delegate duties as needed in terms of generating ideas for conference theme, meals, schedule, speakers, etc. o work in close communication with the College Cup Track Chair o work in close communicate with NMSA President
• ixv) College Cup Coordinator will serve a one year term and • organize the annual NMSA College Cup including: o Promotion the College Cup on all Member school campuses and at AANP o Coordinate Campus tournaments o Review and approve proposals from winning teams “ o Produce T-shirts for all participants o Distribute Print material for national tournament as well as campus tournaments
• xv) Director of Quality Assurance will serve a one year term and be responsible for: • Maintain quality assurance data for nutriceutical companies including • Requesting quality assurance information from nutriceutical companies on a periodic basis • Analyzing and verifying data • Publishing data in an e-book available for purchase from NMSA
Synopsis: These Bylaws replace Student Coordinators presently at each school with NMSA chapters consisting of at least a NMSA Chapter President, Vice President, Treasurer and a Secretary.
Other positions include an NMSA Chapter AMSA representative, an NMSA Chapter Legislative Representative and an NMSA Chapter Global Health Ambassador.
Article VII: NMSA Chapters Section 1: Any group of medical students in any CNME accredited medical school or CNME Candidate school in the United States, its territories or in Canada may petition for a chapter within the Association. The petitioners shall duly complete, sign and date the petition and submit it to the Executive Committee for acceptance. No school shall have more than one NMSA Chapter. Section 2: All chapters must have constitutions or operating bylaws and changes to them must be submitted to the Vice President of Communications who will present them to the Executive Committee
Section 3: All newly elected chapter officers and leadership positions must be reported to the Vice President of Communications within in 30 days following school elections. Chapter officers will consist of a minimum of two positions (President and Secretary) but ideally will include: Chapter President Chapter Vice President Chapter Secretary ChapterTreasurer
Section 4: Each chapter will also elect the following positions who will report to their NMSA National counterpart. AMSA Chapter Coordinator Chapter Legislative Representative Chapter Global Health Ambassador
All CNME students are eligible to belong to an NMSA Chapter. However, if not already an NMSA members, once joining an NMSA Chapter students are required to become NMSA members and remain a member in good standing. Each Chapter shall maintain records of membership participation. Each chapter may plan and participate in their own fund raising as desired. However, they are required to participate in NMSA events dictated by the Executive Committee.
Synopsis: Bylaws have been changed to have the VP of Membership take over President’s duties in the event the President and VP of Communication are removed from duties in the event of misconduct.
In a case where the member accused of misconduct is either the Corporation President or the Vice President of Communication, the Corporation Vice President of Membership will perform the duties ascribed to these entities above, in a misconduct procedure.
