ABOUT ZRT CUP
The ZRT Cup is a collegiate quiz bowl sponsored by ZRT Laboratory, and presented by NCNM and NMSA. Each school chooses a team of 4 players (3 minimum) and one alternate to compete. The competition is a double elimination game – in order to be defeated, it is necessary to lose 2 heats.
If you are intersted in being a part of the ZRT Cup, contact your local ZRT Cup coordinator, or email
This years event will take place in Bellevue, WA at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, in conjunction with the AANP annual convention August 15-18th. Specific dates and times for the ZRT Cup have not been decided.
CALL for QUESTIONS
The ZRT Cup necessitates approximately 600 quiz questions, which need to be medical in nature. Questions are typically clinically founded or reference basic sciences. If you wish to submit a question for the ZRT Cup please review the submission guidelines below and use the online submission form. NMSA requests that all questions include a reference, as all questions will be reviewed before their use in the Cup. Also, Continuing Education credit has been requested for the submission of questions.
Question submission Guidelines for 2012 ZRT Cup
- Written so that they have only one correct answer possible. If there is more than one correct possible answer, every possible correct answer should be included in the answer key (along with the references/source for the information)
- Correct answers must have sources listed. These sources should be of a caliber worthy of being included on a ND program classroom reading list.
- Ideologically inflammatory/opinion questions are not admissible. (eg, questions that disparage other medical professions)
- Include pronunciation keys for any words that are difficult to pronounce. (the moderator will thank you)
- Units for US and Canada must both be given.
The questions will encompass the following topics:
1. Nutrition
a. Vitamins
b. Minerals
c. Whole foods
d. Biochemistry
Example:
Good: Of the following minerals: mineral A, mineral B, mineral C, which one is most associated with promoting cardiac health?
Bad: Which mineral is associated with promoting cardiac health? (This is misleading because
it becomes a question of "which mineral associated with cardiac health am I thinking of . . . " There are too many ways to show that almost any mineral could be somehow associated with cardiac health in some way.)
Good: The Krebs Citric Acid Cycle results in a net gain of how many ATP?
Good: Of the following foods, food A, food B, food C, which is the richest in Vitamin A?
2. Botanicals
a. Names
b. Actions
c. Families
d. Indications
e. Contraindications
f. Toxic Herbs
g. Constituents
Each botanical should be mentioned in both its common and Latin genus/species name. Only use botanicals included on the NPLEX blueprint.
Follow the question format guidelines for Nutrition. In addition, please keep in mind that there are very different schools of thought when it comes to botanical prescribing. Please keep questions to the most globally recognized indications and contraindications. Be sure to source your answer. Please include a pronunciation key for the genus/species names at the end of the question.
3. Lab Testing
a. Pathology
Include units and standards found in both US and Canada.
4. Philosophy/Homeopathy
a. History
b. Tenets
c. Therapeutic Order
d. Homeopathic Philosophy
e. Remedies/Constitutional prescribing
f. Acute prescribing
Good: Of the following remedies, remedy A, remedy B, remedy C, which has a keynote of right sided symptoms.
Include only those homeopathic remedies included in the most recent NPLEX blueprint.
5. Diagnosis/CPD
Pathognomonic questions are good here, such as "list 2 abnormal symptoms that might be found on chest examination in a patient with disease A"
6. Hydrotherapy/Physical Medicine
There are many schools of thought when it comes to hydrotherapy and physical medicine. Please ask questions about the most globally accepted uses/techniques and indications. Site your answers.
Physical medicine questions should include all accepted names for special tests mentioned in the question (unless asking the other known names is the nature of the question).
7. Basic Science
a. Physiology
b. Anatomy
c. Immunology
